Controlling exudate should be a primary concern for care givers. Assessment of the type, colour, amount, consistency and odour of wound exudate provides a valuable guide as to how the wound is progressing. A wound dressing must be able to manage the rate and amount of exudate from the wound without drying it out or causing maceration of the surrounding skin. If managed appropriately, wound exudate should begin to decrease as healing progresses.
