Alginates are non-woven absorbent dressings derived from seaweed. Placed into the wound in a dry form, they absorb exudate to form a hydrophillic gel whilst maintaining a moist wound interface. Alginates also possess haemostatic properties and are therefore particularly useful in bleeding wounds. These products should not be moistened before they are applied to a wound and will always require a secondary dressing.
